I am currently itching to get back into bike riding. On the nice days between the current chilly / unpredictable weather I’ve been riding my bike here and then to get back into shape and to re-learn all the subtleties of cycling in the city. I’m using a Fuji Odessa bike that cost me $0 but plan on upgrading to a nice cyclocross or plain ol road bike in the future. Atlanta’s topography and lack of urban planning isn’t too friendly to the cyclist and the drivers here seem to think that if you aren’t in a car you must respect those that are. Stopping at crosswalks to allow pedestrians to cross is some kind of strange, foreign chore that people here don’t want to filthy their commute with.
Enter Bikely.com. Bikely is one of the best mashuplications (i just coined something big) I’ve seen in a while. Working on top of the google maps api, Bikely lets users share their favorite bike routes, tagging them with things like “high-traffic”, “on-road”, etc. A search for “Atlanta” currently returns 193 results with some pretty great results. As soon as the weather warms up I’ll be all over these.
